Article: Credit Cards and Your Storefront

You've selected your domain name, you've gotten all your business licenses, and your products have been selected and prepared for sale. So, how do you want your customers to pay?

Hint: Credit cards are a natural for online sales!

Let's assume you are planning to accept credit cards. A merchant account, or some sort of third party processor is needed to collect credit card payments online. You have several options.

Merchant accounts allow you to collect payments made by major credit card. You'd set this type of account up with your bank. Make sure you tell your bank that you plan to accept online payments. There are fees associated with this service, so you may want to shop around.

Processing gateways allow for the transaction of credit card information from the cardholder to the merchant account. Verisign and Authorize.net are two of the most well known. If you have a merchant account, check to see if they provide this service with your account.

Third party processors such as Paypal and Propay allow you to accept credit card payments securely through their servers. Both charge fees for their services, but are great options for those who do not want the expense of a merchant account. These two options get the best reviews from my clients.
